A Season of New Beginnings

A Season of New Beginnings

Happy Easter, I hope you are all enjoying the bank holiday weekend.

There’s something about Easter Sunday that always feels like a quiet turning point.

Not in a big, dramatic way, but in those small, steady shifts you start to notice if you’re paying attention. The clocks go forward and the days start to feel longer. There’s more light in the mornings, and it lingers just that little bit longer into the evening.

And after what has felt like a long, dark, slightly relentless winter, that light brings with it a real sense of possibility.

You notice the changes all around you. Buds are starting to appear on trees that only a few weeks ago felt completely bare. Flowers are slowly beginning to push through the soil. And in that subtle shift in the air that makes stepping outside feel that little bit easier and a lot more inviting.

Even if, on some days, winter still likes to remind us it’s not quite finished yet, there’s a sense now that brighter, lighter days are just around the corner.

It’s a reminder that things change. That energy returns. That we get to begin again.

Working With the Seasons

There’s something quite powerful about tuning into the natural rhythm of the seasons, rather than pushing against them.

Winter invites us to slow down, rest a little more, and turn inwards.

Spring gently encourages us to reawaken, move more, get outside, and start again.

It’s not just a feeling, it’s how we’re wired.

Our bodies are naturally guided by circadian rhythms, our internal clock that responds to light and darkness across the day and through the seasons. These rhythms influence everything from our sleep and energy levels to mood, focus and overall wellbeing. When we align with them, getting outside in natural daylight, especially in the morning, moving our bodies, and allowing ourselves to wind down as the light fades, we support a more balanced, healthy system. In a world that often pushes us to override these natural cues, simply tuning back into them can have a powerful impact on how we feel, think and function day to day.

As the days get longer and lighter, our energy levels begin to shift. We naturally feel more motivated, more alert, and more open to doing things we might have resisted in the darker months.

By working with that rhythm, getting outside more, embracing the daylight, and allowing ourselves to move with the season rather than forcing a pace, we can support both our physical and mental well-being in a really simple, natural way.

And spring is the perfect time to lean into that.

A Shift in Energy

For me, this time of year always brings a renewed appetite for being outdoors.

Through the winter months, it can take a bit more effort. When the days are short, you naturally want to stay at home, and finding the motivation to get outdoors can be challenging.

I surprised myself this past winter by starting cold water dipping. I met a friend in early December for coffee, and she told me she was dipping in the river on Sunday mornings and asked if I would like to join her.

True to form, I said yes, " That sounds like fun.

Roll on my first Sunday dip, and it did not seem like such a good idea.

But I got on with it. It was not easy, and to be honest, I struggled. It challenged my mindset and my ability to embrace the elements and overcome discomfort.

My weekly cold water dips have been a big part of this winter. There have been Sunday mornings when it has been cold and miserable, and I would have far rather stayed in bed with a hot mug of tea, but every time I have gone, I have never regretted it.

And now, as we move into spring, there is a real sense of reward. The water is still cold, but it feels more manageable. More inviting, even. I am already looking forward to building in a weekday dip as the evenings get longer.

Back to the Trails

With a little more daylight, it feels like there is also a little more space to think, to plan, and to do more.

Spring always feels like the perfect time to return to things that may have slipped a little over winter.

For me, that is getting back out on the mountain bike more regularly.

There is something about riding through the trails at this time of year, the ground starting to dry, the colours returning to the landscape, that mix of fresh air and movement, that just feels incredibly grounding.

It is not about big goals or pushing too hard. It is about reconnecting. Finding that rhythm again. Enjoying being outside and moving through it.

Planning What’s Next

There is also a quiet excitement that comes with this time of year, the sense that new adventures are just around the corner.

From making plans with friends for small, spontaneous adventures to thinking about bigger trips, I love that feeling of having things to look forward to.

I have already started thinking about what those might look like over the coming months, and more importantly, who I will share them with.

Because that is often the best part.

Time outdoors with friends, with family, with Roddy. Shared experiences that do not need to be complicated to be meaningful.

Just being out there, together.

Making the Most of It

Spring does not arrive all at once. It unfolds gradually.

But if there is one thing I have learned over the years, it is this: these moments are worth noticing. Worth leaning into.

The longer days.

The lighter mornings.

The first signs of growth and colour returning.

They all add up to something quite powerful, a sense of fresh energy, fresh perspective, and the opportunity to start again, however that looks for you.

So whether it is a short walk, a ride around the block, a dip in cold water, or the start of something bigger, I hope you find a way to get outside and make the most of it.

Because this is the season where it all begins again.

Happy spring adventuring!

Change Your Schedule, Change Your Life by Suhas Kshirsagar

I read this book a few years ago after Moira, a yoga practitioner and friend of FINDRA, recommended it to me, and I really loved it. It’s a simple reminder of how powerful it can be to align with your body’s natural rhythms, showing how small shifts in how you move through your day can have a big impact on how you feel.
