Spring is a season of renewal - and tonight we will have more time, as the clocks go forward and our evenings become a longer, brighter affair. We have downplayed the New Year’s resolutions, the timing is physically and mentally draining, however, maybe now is the perfect opportunity to embrace one: getting outdoors, connecting with your community, and making a positive impact.
Supporting your local environment and community isn’t just about giving back - it also brings a deep sense of fulfillment, strengthens social bonds, and boosts your own well-being. Small actions, when done collectively, can create real change. Whether it’s lending a hand in a local project, joining a group with shared interests, or making more sustainable choices, there are countless ways to get involved. Here are some ideas to inspire you to step outside and make a difference this spring.
Join a Community Clean-up
Litter-picking may not sound glamorous, but it has an immediate and visible impact. Many local councils and community groups organise clean-up events, or you can simply grab a bag and a pair of gloves and do your own mini clean-up while on a walk. Removing rubbish from parks, riversides, and green spaces helps wildlife, improves the environment, and makes outdoor spaces more inviting for everyone. Friend of FINDRA, Jo Mosely often posts about clearing plastic from the beaches, something that obviously benefits wildlife, but also, isn’t it so rewarding to see a clean, litter free beach!
Get Involved in Outdoor Volunteering
Susie White in her garden that she created from waste land
From tree planting and habitat restoration to maintaining public footpaths, outdoor volunteering is a rewarding way to support nature and local ecosystems. Many organisations run conservation events where you can learn new skills while giving back. Community gardens are another great way to engage with the outdoors, meet like-minded people, and contribute to sustainable food projects. There are community gardens all over the UK with more popping up every day. For some inspiration, why not read Susie White’s book - Second Nature. The benefits to green spaces are endless.
Support Local Businesses and Markets
Is there anything better than a long walk on a Saturday followed by picking up some fresh, organic produce from the local market or grabbing a coffee at your local High Street Cafe (cake too, obviously). Shopping locally strengthens the economy and reduces the environmental impact of long supply chains. Farmers’ markets, independent shops, and craft fairs are excellent places to discover handmade and locally sourced products. By choosing to support women-led businesses and ethical brands, you can help sustain creativity and entrepreneurship in your area.
Join a Women’s Outdoor Group
It seems an obvious thing to do, but we all know it can be daunting to try something new. However, being active outdoors is great for mental and physical health, and joining a women-focused group can make it even more empowering and less intimidating. Whether you’re interested in cycling, running, hiking, or wild swimming, there are many fantastic communities that offer encouragement and camaraderie. These groups provide a welcoming space for women to enjoy the outdoors together, regardless of experience level. The importance of these groups cannot be overstated. These are safe spaces for beginners, people who are early in their outdoor adventure journey, and by participating in them, you are not only benefitting yourself, but becoming part of a much larger community movement which will benefit the lives of others.

Take Part in a Sponsored Challenge
If you're looking for a way to stay motivated and give back at the same time, why not take part in a sponsored challenge? Whether it's a charity run, swim, cycle, or hike, these events bring people together to support important causes while pushing personal limits. The social aspect of training and participating in a challenge can be incredibly rewarding - you'll meet like-minded people, feel a sense of camaraderie, and be part of a wider community all working towards a shared goal. Plus, knowing that your efforts are supporting a cause close to your heart adds an extra layer of motivation to get out and get active.
Outdoor Clubs and Groups to Check Out
We would love to shout out these incredible groups which create fantastic communities and who have a wider social agenda:
FNY Collective – "Bike bantz and belly laughs!" If you like Mountain Biking, (or want to give it a go) and if you enjoy having a great time, then the FNY Collective is for you! Their events are all about FUN not competition, they simply want to spread the love of bikes and build a fearless community. All profits made are reinvested into their community, various other important local causes and ending period poverty!
Girls on Hills - The UK’s only guided trail, fell, and skyrunning company specifically designed for women. They offer guided runs for those looking to break free from the road and explore the mountains, as well as navigation, mountain safety, and hillwalking courses suitable for beginners. Committed to inclusivity, they also provide free spaces on their courses to help remove financial barriers to participation. Incredible
The Outdoor Swimming Society – The OSS is a membership platform where you can research and find a swimming group that suits you, as well as sharing valuable advice and inspiration to those who are regular swimmers to just dipping your toe in. Membership is completely free, and they have been partners of Level water for 10 years, who raise millions to provide swim lessons for children with disabilities.
Trash Free Trails - TFT are a great organisation who bring together outdoor communities to make a real difference. I know you all take your debris home with you, and leave nothing behind but footprints, but not everyone is as conscientious and littering is a real problem. TFT brings communities together to remove single use pollution from outdoor spaces. You can do this yourself, and use their app to report back, or you can bring a group of people together and start a movement in your local area.
These are just a few of our picks, but please feel free to give a shout out to your own organisations below!
A Resolution for a Brighter Spring
Stepping into spring with a mindset of connection and contribution can bring real joy. By taking small actions - whether that’s picking up litter, volunteering, shopping locally, or joining an outdoor group - you’ll not only support your community and the environment but also enhance your own well-being. This season, let’s make a resolution that feels good, does good, and brings people together.
What small action will you take to support your community this spring?
