The Power of Outdoor Friendships – Strengthening Bonds through Shared Adventures

Hi Friends of FINDRA

As the weekend, and indeed the year, draws to a close, we wanted to take a moment to celebrate one of the most inspiring and rewarding aspects of participating in outdoor adventures: friendship. There’s something truly special about the friendships formed when women come together in the outdoors. These connections go beyond shared hobbies - they become a source of strength, joy, and encouragement that can carry us through life’s highs and lows. Without the  friendships formed on the trails of the Scottish Borders, FINDRA would not likely exist.

The Unique Bond of Outdoor Friendships

Outdoor adventures are an incredible way to connect with others. Whether it’s a brisk morning hike, a muddy mountain bike trail, or a long walk along the coast, being in nature brings out a side of ourselves that’s often left behind in everyday life. Stripped of daily distractions, we can focus on what truly matters and be present with those we’re with. These shared experiences are grounding, bringing us closer together as we challenge ourselves, share moments of awe, and sometimes even lean on each other for support.

There’s something beautifully unfiltered about friendships formed outdoors. Out there, we’re free to be ourselves - sweaty, messy, and exhilarated! We cheer each other on, encourage one another to push through tough moments, and celebrate each other’s successes. And through these shared adventures, we learn more about ourselves and our friends, creating bonds that grow stronger with every step, climb, or turn of the trail.

Finding Your Adventure Community

Whether you’re new to outdoor adventures or looking to expand your circle, there are so many ways to find like-minded women who share your passion for nature. Here are a few tips to help you connect with others and grow your outdoor tribe:

  1. Join Local Adventure Groups or Clubs: Many communities have walking, hiking, or cycling groups specifically for women. Check local listings, community boards, or social media platforms to find a group near you. You may even discover new trails or activities you’ve never tried!
  2. Look for Outdoor Events or Meet-Ups: Events like adventure festivals, charity runs, or community clean-up days are perfect places to meet new people. Even if you arrive solo, you’ll quickly find others who share your enthusiasm for the outdoors.
  3. Follow Adventure Influencers and Bloggers: Many women share their outdoor journeys online, creating a virtual community of like-minded adventurers. Follow those who inspire you on social media, and don’t be afraid to comment or reach out - many of them organise meet-ups or share tips on local gatherings.
  4. Organise Your Own Group Adventure: If you’re feeling ambitious, invite friends or acquaintances to join you for a weekend hike, a beach clean-up, or even a short bike ride. Sometimes, all it takes is an open invitation to bring people together, and you might find others eager to join in.

Favourite Book

Swing Time by Zadie Smith

Zadie Smith is one of the great, understated, feminist writers.  This story, about best friends who meet at tap dance class and it follows their journey around the globe.  Friendship, whether life-long or new, consistent or estranged is at the heart of the story and it is riveting.

Favourite Song

Anything that Shines - Hailey Beavis

Haley Beavis's song about resilience, set backs and the power of personal growth is such an uplifting tune.  In her own words "It’s my hand held out for friendship and my middle finger up in the rear view mirror."
