March 8th marked International Women's Day, a global celebration of women's social, economic, cultural, and political achievements. It's a day to recognize the progress made towards gender equality and to acknowledge the challenges that still lie ahead. This year, as we commemorate this important day, it's essential to reflect on the significance of empowering women in all spheres of life, including the great outdoors.
International Women's Day has a rich history dating back over a century, rooted in the tireless efforts of women fighting for their rights. From the suffragette movement to the continued advocacy for gender equality today, this day serves as a beacon of hope and solidarity for women around the world. It's a day to honour the trailblazers who came before us and to pave the way for future generations of women.
At FINDRA, our mission goes beyond just creating premium outdoor clothing for women; it's about empowering women to embrace the outdoors with confidence and courage. From the very beginning, we've been committed to challenging the status quo in the outdoor industry, which has long (like many other industries) been dominated by men. We believe that women deserve gear that not only performs exceptionally well but also makes them feel strong and empowered in their adventures.

One of the ways we strive to empower more women to lead an active lifestyle is by shining a spotlight on people who are doing great things in the outdoors and beyond. The adventurers who are breaking down barriers, removing boundaries and opening the door for more women to feel welcome in the outdoors.
Last year at Kendal Mountain Film Festival FINDRA collaborated with the amazing women behind the film ‘Women on the Move” a thought-provoking film, inspired by the insightful work of Professor Katrina Jungnickel, that delved into the history of women's activewear spanning more than two centuries. Throughout history, women have displayed pioneering spirit in their quest to spend time outdoors, often adapting their attire to facilitate participation in outdoor activities. From the suffragettes hiking for political causes to pioneering female explorers like Isabella Bird and Nellie Bly, women have defied societal norms to engage with nature. They modified clothing, creating more practical attire such as bloomers or tailored suits, enabling greater mobility and comfort. Despite facing criticism and challenges, their determination led to the gradual acceptance of women in outdoor pursuits. Their legacy persists, inspiring future generations of women to explore and embrace the natural world on their terms.

The film showcased some of the specific outfits that women created, with Kat recreating and making specific items to demonstrate just how determined these women were to ensure they too could enjoy spending time in nature and participate in outdoor activities.
Through her blog for FINDRA ( link at the end of this blog!) Kat shares highlights how women have often been overlooked by brands and clothing manufacturers for many decades and advocates for gender equality in outdoor spaces.

Incorporating Kat's insights into our work at FINDRA has been invaluable, especially when it comes to understanding the importance of women's clothing over the years. As Kat eloquently discusses in her blog, the history of women's clothing is fraught with challenges, from restrictive corsets to impractical outdoor attire. But as women have fought for their rights and carved out space in traditionally male-dominated industries, the landscape of women's clothing has evolved to better meet their needs.
Today, we're proud to offer a range of premium outdoor clothing designed specifically for women, with functionality, comfort, and style at the forefront. Every stitch, every fabric choice, and every design element is carefully considered to ensure that women feel empowered to take on whatever adventure comes their way.
As we celebrate International Women's Day this year, let's recommit ourselves to the fight for gender equality and the empowerment of women everywhere. Together, we can create a world where every woman feels valued, respected, and free to pursue her passions—both indoors and out.
Happy International Women's Day from all of us at FINDRA!
