Last weekend, the FNY Collective Hunt brought a heartwarming reminder of why we ride - for joy, camaraderie, and a touch of mud. This wasn’t a race; it was a nurturing, inclusive event that embraced every level of rider. Rooted in the Collective’s ethos - “FUN not competition, spreading the love of bikes and building a strong, fearless community of like-minded women.”, The Hunt was all about participation, connection and nurturing all who took part. Everyone had a great time on some serious trails.
Saturday morning at the beautiful Traquair House, Innerleithen, the base for the event, came with some severe downpours, drenching the gardens and of course the trail. However, spirits were undimmed as the riders appeared in the Walled Garden. As the rain fell, laughter rang out. Costumes are traditional at The Hunt. The Spice Girls were in attendance, Amy Winehouse, a team of Suffragettes and three Jane Goodalls, all sporting one of her beloved gorillas (or stuffed monkeys). The group warmed up with a lively dance session and some trail guidance. People were encouraged to mingle, share stories of their greatest experiences in the saddle. Then the music stopped and the real adventure began: the treasure hunt.
Bundled in waterproofs, grins, and some precarious wigs under helmets, the ladies set off, following clues through the forest and fields surrounding the grounds of Traquair including the intruiging Traquair Maze. Upon their return, they were hungry, muddy, full of beans and a sense of achievement. Their infectious enthusiasm energized everyone around: high‑fives, cheers, muddy hugs.
After the morning ride, the party continued with music pumping, folks mingling, swapping tips, and sharing stories. In true FNY spirit, Ride Innerleithen were on-hand to fix punctures or mend a broken bike; no one was left stranded. With wheels patched up and appetites whetted, everyone set off again post‑lunch, a bit filthier, but just as hyped up as before.
The weekend climaxed with a prize-giving and raffle - celebrating effort over speed - followed by a relaxed barbeque as evening fell. Laughter, glowing faces, and shared victories underlined what we believe is the best parts of the FNY Hunt: comradery, mixed levels of riders, mutual support, and pure joy.
What Makes FNY Collective Special
Based in the Tweed Valley, the FNY Collective is known for organising female rider-focused, inclusive events rooted in community. Their signature style: no‑rules creativity, embracing all abilities - from flats to clips, novices to veterans - while nurturing self‑belief, skills, and connections. It's trail riding as empowerment, where support and friendship come first.
Why It Matters
- Inclusivity: Everyone is welcome - regardless of ability or kit - and the supportive setup proves it.
- Uplifting Environment: The combination of music, energy, and encouragement turns muddy rides into celebrations.
- Real-world support: The experienced leaders build confidence - and trust - among riders through practical advice and general enthusiasm.
-
Collective joy: This was teams of women riders, across skill levels, working together, not against each other.
The Hunt captures what we all love about being outdoors - it wasn't about who could go fastest; it was about cherishing the ride, the people, the muddy glorious mess. It was about stepping off the bike with a grin, a story to tell, and a sense of true accomplishment.
